Learning to Drive - FAQ

What do I need to start learning to drive?
You will need to be at least 17 years of age. You will also need to have received your valid privisional driving licence. You should be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 m (about 5 car lengths). If you cannot do this without, you will need to wear glasses or contact lenses while driving.

Can I start driving before passing the theory test?
Yes. You will be able to drive as a learner from your 17th birthday, provided you have received your provisional driving licence.

When can I take my theory test?
You will be able to take your theory test once you are 17, and have received your provisional driving licence. You should make sure you are fully prepared for both the multiple choice questions and the hazard perception.

I took the theory test already, but I only passed the multiple choice, or the hazard perception. Can I resit just the part I failed?
No. The multiple choice test and the hazard perception must both be passed in the same sitting. If you fail either component, you will have to resit both.

When can I take my practical test?
You will need to have passed your theory test before you can book the practical test. In order to pass the practical test, you will need to demonstrate to the examiner that you are ready to drive on your own.
